Cape Cod Vacation Planning: What First-Time Visitors Want to Know

Planning your first Cape Cod vacation? Have a few questions?

I see the same questions over and over again in travel forums, Facebook groups, and from CapeDays readers.

So I’ve pulled together a few of the most common ones — and answered them, to help you get your bearings.

What is the best Cape Cod vacation town?

There isn't a simple, one-size-fits-all answer to this question because each area of the Cape — and each town — is different.

The bottom line: it depends on what you're looking for. Days of beach time, lots of activities, easy day trips, somewhere quiet?

If you want help narrowing it down, here's my guide to:

How bad is summer traffic really?

It can be bad, especially on summer weekends and holidays.

The worst backups happen approaching the bridges where traffic can crawl for miles and add a significant amount of time to your drive.

Once you’re on the Cape, you’ll sometimes hit slowdowns at the Mashpee, Hyannis, and Orleans rotaries and on stretches of local roads that are one lane in each direction. Most of the time, though, even the busiest on-Cape traffic only adds a few minutes to your drive time.

Where are the best beaches on the Cape?

With more than 100 public beaches spread across five different bodies of salt water, it’s impossible to say which are best.

The Atlantic Ocean beaches have a wild, unspoiled feel with strong, cold surf. Cape Cod Bay beaches have warmer, calmer water and change dramatically with the tides. And the beaches along Nantucket Sound, Vineyard Sound, and Buzzards Bay have the warmest water and gentle waves.

So wherever you are on the Cape, you’re never far from beaches that fit your definition of “best.”

Do I need a car on Cape Cod?

Short answer: yes.

The Cape is much more spread out than you might think. So unless you plan to spend all your time in one walkable area, you’ll need a car to get around — or plan to rely on rideshare services like Uber or Lyft.

Does everything close after Labor Day?

No, everything does not close after Labor Day.

The time from Labor Day to Columbus Day is Cape Cod’s fall shoulder season. Things start to wind down gradually during this time. But plenty of shops, restaurants, activities, and attractions stay open.

Good to Know ...

Cape Cod vacations can range from surprisingly affordable to bucket-list expensive.
