Dennis Visitors Guide

Dennis is one of Cape Cod’s most versatile vacation towns.

Whether you’re here for beach time, outdoor activities, good food, or all of the above with a little culture mixed in, you'll find it in Dennis.

Where is Dennis on Cape Cod?

Dennis is in the Mid-Cape region, near the bicep of Cape Cod's distinctive "arm".

Map showing regions and town locations on Cape Cod

The town of Dennis is bordered by Cape Cod Bay along its northern shoreline and by Nantucket Sound along its southern shoreline.

Yarmouth is to the west, and Harwich and Brewster are to the east.

The town's central location makes it easy to do day trips to other parts of the Cape. And there's a seasonal ferry from Harwich (the town next door) to Nantucket if you want to visit the island.

About Dennis

The town of Dennis is made up of five villages:

  • East Dennis and Dennis Village on the north side of town; West Dennis and Dennis Port on the south side, and South Dennis in the middle of town.

The north side villages have kind of a laid-back, somewhat rural feel.

On the south side there's more of a summer beach vacation vibe.

And in between, it's a mix of shops and businesses along with parks and conservation areas.

There are great beaches on both sides of town (more about that in a minute). And you'll have plenty of activities, attractions, and dining spots to choose from, all around the town.

Good to Know ...

Dennis isn’t a walk-everywhere kind of town.

You’ll likely want a car to get between beaches, restaurants, and activities.

Beaches in Dennis

Dennis has more public beaches than any other town on Cape Cod — some on Cape Cod Bay and some on Nantucket Sound, plus a few on freshwater ponds.

What's the difference between the Bay beaches and the Sound beaches? In a word: tides.

When the tide goes out on Cape Cod Bay, it goes way out.

On Nantucket Sound, the tides are nowhere near as dramatic.

West Dennis Beach on Nantucket Sound at low tideLow tide on Nantucket Sound doesn't change the shoreline very much.

On both shorelines, there are large beaches with amenities like restrooms, snack bars, lifeguards, and beach wheelchairs available in season — as well as smaller "neighborhood beaches" that have few (if any) amenities.

Good to Know ...

Dennis beach parking passes are valid at public beaches on both sides of town.

That means you can use the same pass to park at more than 15 beaches in Dennis, on Cape Cod Bay and on Nantucket Sound.

Activities & Attractions in Dennis

Dennis isn’t just about the beaches. There’s more than enough to see and do around town when you’re not splashing and sunning.

Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

Walking & Biking Trails

Dennis has some great options for walking and biking, including a section of the Cape Cod Rail Trail that runs through town. It’s a paved, easy-to-follow trail that’s popular with both cyclists and walkers, and it connects to a much longer route that stretches across several Cape towns.

You’ll also find shorter walking trails in conservation areas around town if you’re looking for something quieter.

Arts & Culture

Arts and culture are a big part of Dennis, especially in the summer. The town is home to the Cape Playhouse (America’s oldest professional summer theater), as well as the Cape Cod Museum of Art with its focus on the works of local artists.

You’ll also find smaller galleries and studios around town, along with seasonal exhibitions and art shows.

Watersports

Dennis offers quite a few ways to get out on the water.

Kayaking and paddle boarding are popular on Swan River in Dennis Port, where the water is usually calm and easy to paddle.

If you’re after something more high-energy, parasailing is available out of Sesuit Harbor on Cape Cod Bay. And if fishing is more your speed, charter boats leave from Sesuit Harbor as well.

Parks & Playgrounds

Dennis has plenty of parks, playgrounds, and conservation areas scattered around town, so it’s easy to find a place to stretch your legs or let the kids run around.

Some spots are simple neighborhood playgrounds, while others have walking paths, open fields, and room to explore. And places like the All Access Playground in West Dennis and the Braille & Sensory Trail at Johnny Kelley Recreation Area make it easy for visitors of all abilities to enjoy.

Historic Sites & Landmarks

Dennis has a number of historic sites you’ll come across as you make your way around town. Places like the Josiah Dennis Manse and the old West Schoolhouse (a one-room school built in the 1700s) reflect the town’s early days and are open for seasonal tours.

There are a few well-known landmarks, too, including Scargo Tower, a 30-foot stone tower you can climb for big views over Cape Cod Bay.

Places to Stay in Dennis

Dennis has nearly every kind of vacation accommodations you can think of.

You'll find a great variety of places to stay on the south (Nantucket Sound) side of town — especially in the area along Old Wharf Road and Chase Avenue if you're looking for waterfront lodging.

On the Cape Cod Bay (north) side of town, direct beachfront lodgings are a little tougher to come by.

But if you're okay with a short walk, bike ride or drive to the beach, you'll find vacation rentals and small hotels, motels, inns and B&Bs spread throughout the north-side villages.

Good to Know ...

The most popular lodgings tend to book up early, so it's a good idea to make your reservations well in advance.

Just be sure to read and understand the lodging's cancellation policy. They’re usually enforced very strictly!

Enjoy your visit to Dennis!
