Clamming for Steamers in Orleans

by Ed
(Orleans, MA)

Question: Where to dig steamers in Orleans?

Dee's Reply: Hi Ed - Sorry, I don't know which areas in Orleans are currently open for recreational shellfishing. The town usually posts its open-areas map online here.

(FYI: For some reason, when I clicked on the map link on that page just a few minutes ago, it brought me to a log-in page rather than to the shellfishing areas map. Hmmmm. Maybe you'll have better luck with it than I'm having.)

Anyway, if you can't access the shellfishing area map on the town's website, then I'd suggest you take a ride down to the Orleans Sticker office and speak with the person who sells the shellfish permits. He/she will give you a map of the open areas and a copy of the town's shellfishing regulations - along with some insights about the best places to dig steamer clams, I'm sure.

Happy clamming, and enjoy your fresh steamers!!

Best Regards,

Dee

Clamming in Orleans

Where can I find short shell clams in Orleans? I asked at the permit office in Orleans and they did not have a clue to where the clams are.

Dee's Reply: Here's a map and information sheet (PDF) showing the open and closed shell fishing areas in the Town of Orleans as of June 22, 2017:

Where are the most productive spots for soft-shell clams? Sorry, I'm not familiar enough with all the clamming areas in Orleans to help you with that. If you stop by Goose Hummock Shop (15 Rt. 6A in Orleans), I'll bet someone there can give you the inside scoop.
